Susquehanna River
American Shad Passages - 2007 |
| Shad operations got off to a late start in 2007 due to colder than normal river
temperatures, which had been in the mid to upper 40s through most of April. Little movement at the fishways
is seen until water temperatures reach at least 50°F, which encourages upstream shad movement. The Conowingo East
fish lift began operation on April 23, with a water temperature of 54°F and the 1st American shad passed through
on April 26. Water temperatures then rose more quickly than normal. The last day of operation was on
May 31 and the water temperature was 80°F.
From 2002 through 2006, the water temperatures on May 31st
at Conowingo ranged from 64 to 72° F. While the runs start up as water nears 50°F, they tend to slow
down or cease when temperatures reach the upper 70’s. In 2007, favorable temperatures occurred during a much
shorter time frame than usual.
