Alloway Resolution Urges Boaters to Wear Life Jackets
June 24, 2013

HARRISBURG – A resolution recently approved by the Senate urges boaters to wear a life jacket to prevent needless tragedies, according to Senator Richard Alloway II (R-33).

Alloway’s resolution, Senate Resolution 162, recognizes the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s (PFBC) “Wear It Pennsylvania” campaign designed to raise public awareness of the importance of life jackets. Of the 11 deaths on Pennsylvania waterways in 2012, only three individuals were wearing a life jacket.

Life Jackets Save Lives – (from left) State Sen. Richard Alloway (R-33), Chairman of the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee, presents a copy of Senate Resolution 162 to G. Warren Elliott, Vice President of the Pennsylvania Board of Fish and Boat Commissioners, on June 26 along the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg. The resolution recognizes the Fish and Boat Commission’s “Wear It Pennsylvania” campaign designed to raise public awareness of the importance of life jackets. Of the 11 deaths on Pennsylvania waterways in 2012, only three individuals were wearing a life jacket. In approximately 80 percent of boating fatalities nationwide last year, the victims were not wearing a life jacket at the time of their accident. Both Sen. Alloway and Commissioner Elliott are wearing inflatable life jackets. More information on safe boating is available online at www.fishandboat.com.

“Boating is an increasingly popular activity throughout the state, so raising awareness of safety measures has never been more important,” said Alloway, who serves as Chairman of the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee. “Nearly 80 percent of all boating fatalities nationwide last year were not wearing a life jacket at the time of their accident, and many of these catastrophes could have been avoided simply through education and taking the necessary precautions.”

In addition to sponsoring the safe boating resolution, Alloway will help kick off safe boating season on June 26. The event, scheduled at 10:15 a.m. at the corner of Front and State Streets along the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg, will encourage safe boating practices and the use of life jackets at all times when individuals are on the water.

PFBC Board of Commissioners Vice President G. Warren Elliott will join Sen. Alloway at the event.

“A life jacket is the most important piece of safety equipment for all boaters,” Elliott said. “I always wear one when I’m kayaking and I urge all boaters to wear one when they are on the water. Very simply, life jackets save lives. Unfortunately, several fatalities have already occurred this boating season and the victims were not wearing life jackets.”
