| The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and PA Fish & Boat Commission along with many other organizations will be at Blue Marsh Lake for a day of fun on Saturday, June 12, 2010. That is the date of the Annual Water Safety Festival, which runs from 12 noon to 5 p.m. It will be held at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area near the swim beach. What better way to celebrate National Fishing & Boating Week, along with National Marina Day, National Get Outdoors Day and other very popular June events during Great Outdoors Month.
What is the Water Safety Festival? It is a fun and educational day that focuses on water and boating safety through a variety of displays and presentations. There is something there for everyone, regardless of your age and interest.
The Corps of Engineers estimates that more than 30 organizations will be participating in this year’s event. These could include the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, American Red Cross, Blue Marsh Sailing Association, Keystone Canoe Club, Northeast Search and Tactical Rescue, Western Berks Ambulance, Sport-Cycle Suzuki/SeaDoo, Kawasaki of Berks, Greater Philadelphia Search and Rescue, Schuylkill River Power Squadron, Sidewinders Bass Club and Reading Fire Department SCUBA Team. Numerous boat dealers will also have the latest watercraft on display.
Dam Control Tower Tours will be offered throughout the afternoon, free of charge. There will also be games in which the young and the young-at-heart can try their skills. For the kids there will be a rod-and-reel casting contest, kayaking and canoeing, and for those 12 years and older there is the Water Safety Scavenger Hunt. In addition, the PFBC will be demonstrating emergency boat operation skills and rescues. So, bring your lawn chair and sun block, and spend the afternoon at Blue Marsh Lake.
The mission of the Fish and Boat Commission is to protect, conserve, and enhance the Commonwealth’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities. For more information about fishing and boating in Pennsylvania, please visit our website at www.fishandboat.com.
