Peter A. Colangelo

Peter A. Colangelo Peter A. Colangelo was the eighth Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. He was sworn in as Executive Director on October 3, 1994.

Mr. Colangelo came to the Commission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District. Before his retirement from federal service in September 1994, Pete served 34 years with the Corps, 20 of which he served as Chief of the Natural Resource Management Branch. His responsibilities included supervision of more than 150 permanent and 100 temporary employees; management of an $18 million budget; supervision of 16 flood control dams in five states; and management of the Corps recreation and natural resources for 16 million recreational visits per year.

Mr. Colangelo has a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He has completed all graduate credit requirements in Parks and Recreation at Slippery Rock University. He is also a registered Landscape Architect, a Certified Leisure Professional in the National Recreation and Parks Association and a Corps of Engineers federal officer. He is regional vice president and a past president of the National Water Safety Congress.

As Executive Director, Mr. Colangelo serves as the chief executive officer of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, an independent agency established in 1866. The Executive Director is appointed by, and reports to, a ten-member Commission appointed by the Governor. The Commission holds official meetings at least twice a year to formulate and act on policy matters and agency regulations. The mission of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is to provide fishing and boating opportunities through the protection and management of Pennsylvania's aquatic resources.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is an organization comprised of 438 permanent, salaried positions and about 130-150 temporary seasonal positions. Major functions include fisheries, boating, property and facilities management (including engineering), environmental services, law enforcement, education and information, and administrative services. In addition to directing the operations and activities of the agency, the Executive Director serves as the agency chief law enforcement officer and by law is a member of the Environmental Quality Board, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council, and an ex-officio member of the Boating Advisory Board.

Mr. Colangelo's interests and hobbies include golf, competitive softball, traveling, visiting National parks and historic sites, deer-archery hunting, bird watching, bowling and, of course, fishing.
