| Fisheries Management Area 2 staff conducted a night electrofishing survey of smallmouth
bass in the free flowing Allegheny River between President and East Brady on the nights of August
21, 22 and 23, 2006. We sampled three historic sites at East Brady, Kennerdell and President sampling
over 4 kilometers of shoreline and totaling 4 hours of electrofishing. We captured a total of 445
smallmouth bass ranging from 4 to19¾ inches
(Table 1). Our results were similar to the Area 3 surveys of the West Branch of the Susquehanna
River in that the Allegheny River also produced an excellent year class in 2005 and 2006 was our best year ever for smallmouth
bass over 12 inches and over 15 inches (Table 2).
Anglers encountered on the water also reported good catches of smallmouth bass using live bait. Floating the Allegheny River in canoes and kayaks is very popular during the summer months and access to the river is good through Warren, Forest, Venango, Clarion and Armstrong counties. Table 1. Length/frequency distribution for smallmouth bass captured by night electrofishing the Allegheny River at East Brady, Kennerdell and President on the evenings of August 21, 22 and 23, 2006.
Table 2. The total number of smallmouth bass captured and a comparison of the number of smallmouth bass captured per hour of night electrofishing in the Allegheny River at three historic sites (East Brady, Kennerdell and President). Standardizing catches to catch per hour (CPH) allows us to make comparisons between waters and between years.
