In late May and early April, Fish Management Area 3, assisted by Fish Management Area 4, electrofished Cherry Run, a tributary to Penns Creek in Union County, as well as Wallace Run, a tributary to Bald Eagle Creek in Centre County. These electrofishing efforts were performed to assess wild trout abundance prior to the opening of the 2004 trout season. We shocked about 300 yards of each stream and collected brook trout and brown trout in both streams. The catches from two sampling runs (excluding previously marked trout recaptured in the second electrofishing run) in each stream are summarized in the table below. The section of Cherry is in the All-Tackle Selective Harvest program with increased size and reduced creel limits while Wallace Run is under the conventional regulations.
The stream sections we shocked on Cherry Run and Wallace Run were both formerly stocked with hatchery raised trout. Currently, both of these streams continue to support good densities of wild brook and brown trout.
