Area 4 biologist recently conducted a trap net and electrofishing survey of Lake Jean, Luzerne County. Over the years this state park lake has experienced a decline in water quality due to acid deposition. During the 1980’s and early 1990’s springtime pH’s as low as 4.3 have been recorded and the fishery was seriously impacted. In 1995 an effort to improve the water quality and fish community was undertaken by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the PA Fish and Boat Commission. Lime has been applied to the lake on an annual basis since the spring of 1995 and annual stockings of game and panfish have been made.
Results of this fish survey indicated an improvement in the fishery but was somewhat disappointing in terms of the numbers, size and catch rates of fish caught. Scales samples were also collected and when the analyses is completed biologist will have a better indication of what additional steps will be necessary to make further improvements to this fishery.
