2003 Spring Sampling Results
Pymatuning Lake is a 13,000-acre lake located in Western Crawford County. PA style trapnets were set from March 27-April 17, 2003 for a total of 77 sets or 1,766 trapnet hours of effort. Over 10,000 fish were caught representing 25 species of fish. This year we caught over 5,200 walleye ranging in size from 200 mm (8 inches) to over 708 mm (27.75 inches). This was a record catch both in terms of total catch and catch per trapnet hour.
Of the 5,173 walleye measured, 87% were equal to or greater than 15 inches. The catch of walleye equal to or greater than 450 mm (17.75 inches) was 987 fish, more then the 10 year combined catch of walleye equal to or greater than 450 mm from 1989 to 1999.
The 2003 muskellunge catch was also a record with 117 fish caught ranging is size from 225 mm (9inches) to 1200 mm (47.75 inches). Good numbers (686) of quality size black crappie were caught with many fish in the 10 to 12 inch size range. The channel catfish population was also impressive with cats up to 700 mm (27.5 inches).
