Briar Creek Lake
May 22, 2002
Briar Creek Lake, a small PFBC impoundment near Berwick in Columbia County, held some big surprises for biologists when we electrofished there on the evening of May 22, 2002. Our total largemouth bass catch rate was 185/hour and our catch rate of bass 18 inches and bigger was 14/hour. The 18 inch plus catch rate was the highest we’ve ever recorded in our area. In the photos below, the four bass pictured together ranged from 18 to 20 inches long, while the lone fish in the net measured 22.1 inches and weighed 7.1 pounds. In addition to large bass, Briar Creek Lake offers excellent opportunities for hatchery trout. We saw a good number of trout remaining from previous stockings during our electrofishing runs.
