BIOLOGIST REPORT

Penns Creek

Survey Report - Penns Creek

Penns Creek was surveyed by Area 3 and Coldwater Unit staff from June 21 to June 24, 1999. The All-Tackle Selective Harvest section and the Catch and Release section were both sampled using representative sites. The site representing the Catch and Release section is located adjacent to the PFBC's field station 22 near the mouth of Cherry Run while the site representing the All-Tackle Trophy Trout reach is located near Ingleby. Brown trout catches were as follows.

Field Station 22 (site length approx 520 yards)

Total # caught on first pass = 286
Number between 7 and 12 inches = 168
Number between 12 and 14 inches = 46
Number greater than 14 inches = 55

Ingleby (site length approx 425 yards)

Total # caught on first pass = 622
Number between 7 and 12 inches = 391
Number between 12 and 14 inches = 55
Number greater than 14 inches = 18

Biologists were extremely pleased with these results. Results are particularly positive in light of the fact that in 1998 there was a severe drought in Pennsylvania, which caused concern that our wild trout fisheries may be negatively affected by the drought conditions. The Ingleby catches were the highest recorded since inception of the All Tackle Trophy Trout Regulations while the Field Station 22 catches were the best since 1993.
