| WHAT IS TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM?
Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is an environmental education program in which students learn about coldwater conservation while raising brook trout from eggs to fingerlings.
This aquarium based program is designed to:
- Foster awareness and knowledge about coldwater conservation in students grades 3 –12 and;
- Encourage continued participation in coldwater conservation, management and recreation programs.
Participants have successfully implemented TIC across the U.S. for more than 20 years through partnerships with Trout Unlimited volunteers, government agencies, and other local organizations.
Objectives
Students will:
- Raise a minimum of 20 brook trout from eggs to fingerlings;
- Observe and identify the life cycle stages of brook trout;
- Describe the environmental conditions needed for trout survival in the classroom and in local streams;
- Describe two reasons why clean water and coldwater conservation are important;
- List three ways brook trout serve as an “indicator species” for healthy coldwater ecosystems;
- Monitor and record aquarium water quality and trout behavior on a weekly basis.
