Public Meeting Scheduled for Update on Colyer Lake
April 29, 2014

HARRISBURG, Pa. (April 29) – The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) announced today that it will host a public meeting in Spring Mills, Centre County, on May 8 to provide an update on reconstruction of the Colyer Lake dam.

The meeting will be held from 6 - 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Penns Valley High School, located at 4528 Penns Valley Road, Spring Mills, PA 16875.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

In early 2013, the PFBC announced that the lake’s dam was unsafe and would have to be rebuilt. This was done after routine inspections by PFBC engineers and the state Department of Environmental Protection found that existing undermining beneath the dam’s spillway had become more severe. As a result, the lake was drawn down by approximately 17 feet as a temporary solution while the PFBC secured funding to rebuild the dam.

In November, Gov. Tom Corbett signed into law a transportation bill which provided funds for the PFBC to rebuild high-hazard dams like Colyer Lake. The $7.2 million construction project is being funded with $5.85 million from the state’s capital budget, $1.25 million from the PFBC as a result of the transportation law, and $100,000 from the Save Colyer Lake organization.

The lake is expected to be fully drained in September. Construction is scheduled to begin in October and be completed by late 2015. The lake is expected to be refilled and fully useable again by summer 2016.

Colyer Lake is a 77-acre reservoir located in Potter Township in Centre County. It is owned by the Commonwealth and managed by the PFBC.
