Public Meeting Scheduled to Discuss Colyer Lake
May 8, 2013
HARRISBURG, Pa. (May 8) – The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) announced today that it will co-host a public meeting with local legislators in Spring Mills, Centre County, on May 16 to discuss dam safety issues at Colyer Lake.

The meeting will be held from 6 - 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Penns Valley High School, located at 4528 Penns Valley Road, Spring Mills, PA 16875.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

The PFBC announced on March 21 that it would begin to drain the lake because of deficiencies in the lake’s dam. This was done after routine inspections by PFBC engineers and the state Department of Environmental Protection found that existing undermining beneath the dam’s spillway had become more severe.

A subsequent analysis by the PFBC now demonstrates that the lake can be partially lowered by approximately 17 feet as a temporary solution while the PFBC seeks funding to rebuild the dam.
“This new pool elevation will provide approximately 30 acres of remaining pool, which is not ideal for fishing and boating, but will allow some continued recreational opportunities while funding for long-term rehabilitation is sought,” said Andy Shiels, PFBC Deputy Director for Field Operations.

The PFBC on March 28 temporarily lifted all seasons, sizes and creel limits on the lake in order to reduce the number of fish in the lake prior to the drawdown.

Colyer Lake is a 77-acre reservoir located in Potter Township in Centre County. It is owned by the Commonwealth and managed by the PFBC. It has been partially drawn down by approximately 10 feet since 2003.
